Down Under In Australia

22

November

ayers rockAustralia, the flattest continent on Earth, has a fairly well diversified landscape and climate throughout. Australia is comprised of six states (Western Australia, South Australia, Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, and Tasmania) as well as the Northern Territory and the Australian Capital Territory (located between Melbourne and Sydney). The large inner portion of Australia is desert land known as the Outback and there is much gold to be found there. Along the northernmost edges of the country, there are lust rainforests and swampy areas as the climate is more tropical. The eastern coast of Australia has the most widely desired climates-boasting temperate and subtropical, the majority of the population found along the southeastern portion of the coast for this reason.

Because the different areas of Australia are so different in landscape and climate, the best times to visit are varying, as well. If trekking through the Outback is your fancy, then you would be best off visiting during Australia’s winter months. While the days are guaranteed to be sunny and warm, the nights will be cold, so go prepared! If it is the Northern Territory you seek, Australia’s mid-fall to mid-spring is the most ideal as that is the dry season. The Northern Territory’s wet season is miserably hot and with very high humidity. As for the other more populated and cooler sections of Australia, the summers are hot and the winters are beautiful with daytime temperatures ranging from 66° to 88°F (19° to 31°C) and hardly ever a drop of rain. For beach weather, Australia’s early fall is most highly recommended as it is more than warm enough without the scorching-hot temperatures of summer.

There are endless attractions in Australia to keep you and yours busy and entertained, no matter which lovely part you choose to visit, first. With the country’s beaches, snowy mountains, rainforests, big cities and deserts, there is certainly something for everyone. To name just a few, there are snow skiing, surfing, road race buggies, tours galore (throughout all areas that include waterfalls in the rainforest and wildlife journeys), zoos, cruises, dolphin safaris, and snorkeling along Cairn’s world-famous Great Barrier Reef. In Sydney, you may take a helicopter tour or see the famed Sydney Opera House or perhaps catch the highly recommended Sydney International Boat Show. Basically, if you enjoy it, you can find it in Australia. Australia even offers many lunch and dinner sight seeing cruises for those wanting fun and festivities even while dining.

November

Canada is the true explorer’s dream; there are endless opportunities to see and adventure all over this beautiful country, with so many varying aspects of people, culture, and terrain. There are thirteen different lake louise albertaprovinces and territories, stitched together like a patchwork pattern of differing people and traditions. In Northern Canada, there are the Yukon, Northwestern Territories, and Nunavut region. In Western Canada are British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba. In Eastern Canada there are Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland and Labrador, and Nova Scotia. As one would imagine, the cities and destinations found in all these different areas are numerous as well as attractive and diverse.

In Canada, there are many different options for your vacation, depending on whether you’ve decided to keep it indoor, outdoor, or mix the two and enjoy a little bit of everything. There a rivers, lakes, deserts, prairies, forests, farm land, oceans, beaches, and parks, all waiting to be experienced by the average vacationer. Not to mention indoor leisure, with hundreds of different spa destinations, outdoor festivals for couples and family fun, as well as other attractions, such as amusement parks, indoor water parks, gaming and casinos, and science museums for individuals and families as well. For fun educational opportunities, families can visit Science World, in Vancouver, British Columbia, London Regional Children’s Museum, in London, Ontario, or Vancouver Aquarium, also in Vancouver, British Columbia. Festivals are a great way to mingle with natives and have fun with other tourists, whether at sporting event festivals, heritage festivals, food and wine festivals, theatre and art festivals, and music festivals. There’s always something going on, so before you travel, make sure to check the local calendar at your destination, to see what’s coming up in that area.

One of the highlights of Canada is the cuisine, and for lobster and crab lovers, there are few other places to travel to with better seafood. One of the most highly recommended places to try lobster, is New Glasgow Lobster Suppers, in New Glasgow, on Prince Edward Island, in Eastern Canada. In French and English areas, such as Quebec, you can find both delicious, and beautiful food made by real French chefs, in luxury dining atmospheres, such as at The Gourmet Route, in Québec, or taste the vintage French wines, bottled and aged on site in Nova Scotia, when you go on Nova Scotia Vineyard Tours. Outdoor markets, filled with vendors selling homegrown fruits, vegetables, as well as fresh pastries and baked goods, and much more, are also a favourite culinary attraction Canada. Visiting in late summer and harvest season is a great idea for those planning to sample the markets of Canada’s cities for a real taste of the country, and tourists should check to see what markets will be open in the area of their destination at the times they plan to visit.

If you’re looking for the perfect place to spend the duration of your trip in Canada, then you’ll have no trouble at all; however, making a choice between so many great places to stay can be a bit more difficult. In the mountainous region of the Yukon territory in Canada, most recommend an intimate experience of the region that you’ll find more at a hostel, bed and breakfast, or guest cabins. In Quebec, there are numerous opportunities for lodging such as youth hostels, campgrounds, educational institutions for students, wilderness lodges, resort accommodations, tourist homes, and hospitality villages as well as conventional hotels.

Transportation and getting around in Canada is best done by car, but if you plan to go across water, they are water taxis and ferries available to those traveling across rivers or waterways to islands. When in city areas, if you plan to spend a day shopping, or strolling through an outdoor market, it’s best to walk, or even rent a bicycle, so that you don’t miss out on something you might not be able to experience in a fast-moving vehicle.

Jamaica-Getting Some Island In Your Life

14

November

Jamaica is the third largest island in the Caribbean, and also the birthplace of Bob Marley, and James Bond. The island itself is tropical, and beautiful inland, with long hours of Caribbean sunshine, and warmth, whereas the coastline is long stretches of white, sandy beaches, with clear blue water that goes on for miles. There are also high, beautiful waterfalls, further inland on the island, as well as the high, majestic Blue Mountain. Most vacationers and tourists expect Jamaica to be a short trip, and quickly explored; however, as varied, and geographically diverse an island as it is, most travelers will discover that there is more to see than they thought.

montego bayThe foods in Jamaica are various, and very culturally influenced; from the seafood to the fruit, very few menus can compare with all the different foods you may, –or may not, depending on the palate, –be savouring on the island. Just to name a few of the native foods that you might be sampling while in Jamaica, there’s steamed cabbage, codfish balls, Callaloo patties, Ackee and Saltfish patties, sweet Cassava pudding, boiled dumplings of various sorts in many dishes, stuffed roast beef, Callaloo fritters, fried jerk chicken, plenty of corn bread, hominy porridge, and much, much more. Jamaica also has a variety of different fruits to try, such as Jackfruit, Guniep, Hog Pum, Tinkin toe and more.

Jamaica has such a wide variety of foods and people, despite it being an island where most of the population is usually said to be of African descent, it is actually compromised of many different cultures. South American, Asian, African, European, East Indian, and Arabic ancestry as well. Much of the reason for this wide variety of culture is that up until 1962, Jamaica was under British rule, and was frequented by travelers from many travelers in Europe and other continents before it became an independent nation unto itself in 1962.

Some of the places most frequently visited are the parishes in Jamaica. Altogether there are fourteen, but the most beautiful and popular are Portland, St. Ann’s, Manchester and Westmoreland. Tourists are also encouraged to visit orchards and savor some of the fruit native to Jamaica. For shopping and lodging, the northern coast of Jamaica is a great place to visit or to lodge for the duration of your stay. If travelers are interested in suspense, and ghostly history lessons, then they should visit Rose Hall, the home where a woman named Annie Palmer lived once; her husband passed away mysteriously, and then the servants disappeared one at a time. Before therapeutic baths were trendy in Europe, they were well established in Jamaica; to see just how much, try the Milk River Baths in St. Elizabeth.

There are several luxurious hotels on the North Coast of Jamaica as well, which include Beachcomber Club Hotel & Suites, Beaches Royal Plantation, Breezes Montego Bay, Cariblue Hotel, Crane Ridge Hotel, Half Moon Hotel, Devine Destiny, as well as dozens more relaxing, and excellent places for any tourist or vacationer to lodge while staying in Jamaica.

Bulgaria-European Beauty

13

November

The country of Bulgaria is a relatively small regioin, linking the Eastern and Western reaches of Europe. The country is located in Southeastern Europe, and has existed for over thirteen centuries, and throughout its history has endured through turbulence and violent wars. There is a legend throughout Bulgaria, that in the beginning, when God was giving all the different peoples of the world gifts, such as wine to the French, and dancers to the Spanish, that when everyone had already left, the Bulgarians came at the very last, because they had so much work to do. Instead of letting the people of Bulgaria go with nothing, God gave them a little of every gift that he had given to the other peoples of the world.

Perperikun is one of the most frequently visited cities in Bulgaria, because it is a sacred city, and is located seven kilometers away from the largest city in that area of the country. One of the twenty-four wonders of the country, is a large castle, that is said to have occupied over ten thousand meters, and was carved in the rocks of the mountain. Some of the stone altars found within the acropolis were used for sacrifices of both animals and humans. The monument of Tatul is known as the Bulgarian Stonehenge. Another popular place to visit, is The Rila Monastery, which is the largest monastery in the entire country, containing various pieces of historical relics and carvings.

The cuisine in Bulgaria is varied to a high extent, and offers dishes, wines, desserts and beers to suit any palate. There are spices relative to Bulgaria as well, that are hard to find in any other part of the world, as well as the cheeses that are made from domesticated animals such as goats, and sheep. One of the traditional recipes from Bulgaria, is Tarator, or cold soup, which has become a trendy recipe throughout the U.S., and in other parts of the world. Other, not so well known cuisine from Bulgaria, is Moussaka, which in Greece is made with ground lamb or beef, and layered with other vegetables, topped with a white sauce, and baked. However, in Bulgaria, the vegetables are primarily potatoes, and isn’t layered, but mixed together. There’s also Sarma, which is minced meat, rice, and phyllo dough, rolled into large plant leaves, and then boiled, and served with a sauce, or glaze. Some regard Shkembe chorba a national treat, while others regard it is inferior, and cheap. Shkembe chorba, happens to be tripe soup, and tripe, is the lining of a cow’s stomach. It’s also well-known as a remedy for hangovers.

Visiting Bulgaria is also an excellent idea for international vacationers who want to explore a beautiful region, without paying intolerably high costs, and dealing with high volumes of tourists. When traveling, the best time of the year all depends on the person; there’s skiing for winter travelers, beautiful beaches for people who want to travel in the summer, and gorgeous, lush plant life, and flora in the spring time. Sofia is a popular area of Bulgaria for luxurious hotels, such as the Hilton Sofia, The Sheraton Sofia Hotel Balkan, The Sofia Princess Hotel, and many more, of varying costs and levels of luxury, for those who want to spend more time in the country, than in their rooms.

Puerto Rico-Jewel Of The Indies

12

November

Puerto Rico is one of the most beautiful islands in the Indies, and contains several varieties of cultures, cuisine, music, and entertainment venues. The capital of Puerto Rico, San Juan, is the largest and most well established city on the island, while it also provides many attractions for tourists, such as Rio Piedras, the “Universal City” which contains the oldest University in Puerto Rico. The music, architecture, and foods are all influenced mainly by that of it’s ancestral Spain, as well as being home to many other cultures as well, such as African, Western American, and Mexican, to name only a few.

The foods in Puerto Rico have just as many cultural influences and origins as the population of the island itself. Some of the foods are even influenced by Creole culture, as well as Western American, and Spanish. The appetizers and soups you’ll most likely be experiencing at least once while visiting, are empanadillas, which are fritters, and crescent shaped, but filled with a variety of meats and cheeses, such as cod, lobster, beef, or crab meat. Also, classic soups, such as frijoles negros, which is black bean soup, or sopón de pollo con arroz, which is soup made from chicken and rice, both, very rich in flavour. Pastelón de carne, or, meat pies, are a very popular dish, as well as carne frita con cebolla, or beef fried with onions. The desserts however, are possibly once of the best reasons to go to Puerto Rico, serving up delights such as boudin de pasas con coco, or coconut bread pudding, as well as Polvo de amor, which is “love powder,” made from grated coconut, then fried until crisp.

There are numerous places to visit in Puerto Rico, aside from their beautiful, expansive beaches, the go on for miles with white sands, and blue, clear waters. For instance, the historic old sections of San Juan, in the Northern region, as well as Arecibo Observatory in Arecibo, and the Rio Camuy Caves in Camuy. In the Easter Region of Puerto Rico, there’s Natural Reserve of Mosquito in Vieques, and also Las Cabezas de San Juan Nature Reserve. In the Central Region of Puerto Rico, there’s Caguana Indian Ceremonial Park in Utuado, and you can also visit an area with many restored, historical haciendas in Las Marias. In the Western Region of Puerto Rico, you can find the only zoo on the whole island, the Mayagüez Zoo. In the Southern Region, you can find more historical landmarks, such as the Serralles Castle.

When travelling to Puerto Rico, or anywhere else, the conditions in the area they’re traveling to at the time is important. Sometimes, when avoiding crowds, and going to an area in a certain season, you may be signing up for more trouble on your vacation; the same is true here. While the average temperature, year-round in Puerto Rico is 80 F, the main tourist seasons are December through April, which is usually when most people from the U.S. travel to escape cold climates. However, avoiding crowds in the down season, travelers can go instead through May and November, which unfortunately also happens to run through hurricane season.

Cyprus-Coveted Beauty

08

November

The island of Cyprus is literally so beautiful, that men and forces have fought over it for centuries for its bounty, tropical climate, attractive flora, and the geography to suit anyone’s taste. It also happens to be the mythical place where the Greek goddess of love and rapture, Aphrodite was born. Men have fought and lost their lives so that one ruler or another might possess the island; such as the Persians, and Egyptians, Mycenaeans, Assyrians, and those are only a few. The most recent feud over Cyprus’s beauty was between the Greeks and Turks.

Now, after all the past wars have been fought, Cyprus is peppered with many different cultural monuments, such as castles from the Crusaders, and even the tomb of Mohammed’s aunt. Even the geography of the island is situated so that there is fun, and adventure to be had all year around. In the center of the island, the terrain is more mountainous, while along the outer region of the island, outward from the mountains, is the plenty coastline, semi-tropical forests and beautiful beaches.

Culturally, Cyprus is highly diverse, and the official languages spoken there are both Turkish, and Greek. “Cypriot” cuisine, is very diverse as well, offering many options for the tasteful and adventurous traveler, such as octopus in red wine, sea bass, red mullet, calamari, while the vegetable that are commonly prepared are usually potatoes and cauliflower. For the turf meat lovers, there’s grilled lamb, and “sheftalia”, which is minced meat, wrapped in mesentery. Those are just a few delicacies travelers enjoy popularly during their stay at the island, however, there are of course, the more tame dishes available for the less digestively adventurous travellers.

Transportation in Cyprus, unlike some other international destinations, is a place where you can actually get around by vehicle. The number of trucks and cars being used for transport are increasing every year, as more and more roads are being paved for better transportation among its populace. Motorcycles and scooters are also popular, as they afford access to crowded shopping areas and streets that are high in traffic. If you plan to visit Cyprus, don’t be afraid to rent a car for the duration of your trip, but if you’re in an urban or heavily populated area, rent a scooter for a day or so, and see if that makes transportation any easier.

There are many different popular hotel and resort destinations in Cyprus, and, one of the topmost of these are in Paphos, which was once the capital of Cyprus, and also is host to many of the beautiful, and legendary historical points of interest. That area is peppered with many different hotels of various levels of luxury, such as Venus Beach, Coral Beach, and St. George Gardens. Limassol is the center for water activity, and beach fun oriented vacationers, with its wide expanses of sandy beaches, and variety of aquatic activities. Popular hotels in Limassol are of course, the Four Seasons, and Amathus Beach. It’s important for vacationers to remember that although the days in Cyprus can be very warm, the nights do get chilly. When packing, make sure to bring many light clothes, but also sweaters for the evenings. It’s also much cheaper to travel to Cyprus in the off-season, however, adverse weather conditions make this a none too popular idea for a good reason.

Travel Insurance

06

November

Unforeseen illness or events can put a complete halt to your travel plans, and become quite expensive, especially if you’ve already made your plans, reservations, and made deposits. This is why Travel Insurance is such a huge part of planning a trip. It can save you many headaches, and a lot of money.

Travel Insurance can cover all the bases, such as trip cancellation, medical issues, baggage loss, etc. Many different types of insurance are available, and with a wide range of companies to choose from, you can find exactly what suits your needs, based on what type of trip you’re taking.

Statistics show that more than 1 million pieces of luggage were lost, damaged, delayed or pilfered by U.S. airlines from May to July, 2007. Travel insurance can help save you from costly losses such as those, as well as keep your mind at ease when traveling.

There are many types of different travel insurance, covering a wide area of common issues. Travel insurance policies offer at least six different types of coverage, intended for different types of trips and travelers. Comprehensive Travel Medical Insurance is mostly for people whom do not have Medical Insurance at home. Emergency travel medical insurance is for those whom have medical insurance at home, but are not covered under said coverage while traveling. Medical evacuation (medevac) insurance covers the cost of an air ambulance, attending physician and nurse, etc. if you become ill enough or so badly injured that you cannot return home on a scheduled commercial passenger flight. Trip cancellation and interruption insurance covers the refund or cancellation fees for having to cancel your trip, or cut it short for various reasons. Supplier default insurance covers any money you lose in the event of the bankruptcy of an airline, cruise line, tour operator, or other travel services provider. Rental car insurance, which is usually referred to as collision insurance, covers the theft or damage of a vehicle you rent, and/or the liability to other people or vehicles you may injure or damage.

There are also many options for insuring your luggage, personal items, etc. through many travel insurance agencies. It is always a good idea to label your luggage to help prevent loss, and to keep any expensive items with you during your travels, or locked away safely when you arrive at your destination. Make sure you keep track of all expensive items at all times, so you can report a loss or theft right away. You can also keep your passport safe by buying yourself a passport pouch, which is usually a small wallet like item that you can strap on under your shirt, or wear under your shirt with the small cord attached to it.

Taking these steps to insure yourself and your items, as well as protect your things, can help keep you from costly losses, and make your traveling experience much more enjoyable. Be sure to discuss any worries about your personal safety and the safety of your personal items with your travel agent, and travel safe, and secure.
